Some adventures can be had virtually anywhere; others you have to seek out. You can visit virtually any island in the Caribbean and enjoy a beautiful resort or even hike a nature trail, but the Petit Piton, that's a different beast altogether.
That's the kind of adventure you seek out if you are brave and if you're looking for a hike that will provide a challenge unlike any you've ever experienced before.
The Petit Piton is not an easy hike by any stretch of the imagination, and it is one that many hikers abandon long before reaching the summit.
In short, hiking Petit Piton Mountain is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who have never climbed before. You've got to love a thrill, seek adventure, want to see St Lucia in a way that few people ever do.
The En Bas Saut Rainforest is one of the best forest trails on the island because of its cascading falls half way on the hike. This St Lucia Hiking adventure is one that you won’t forget, get ready to experience the beauty of St. Lucia’s rainforest, flora and fauna and be educated about nature!
Tour Experience:
This tour starts with a relaxing drive down to the community of Fond St. Jacques to the forest!
The four miles hike is moderate when hiking down to the waterfall but strenuous hiking upwards and lasts about three hours. The first quarter, one hikes about forty five minutes along vegetable farms to the entrance of the En Bas Saut Rainforest Trail. The rainforest trail is covered with dense foliage and endemic tree species such as the Chatagnier and Gommier, it is also a good trail to see some of the island’s one hundred and fifty bird species including the St. Lucian Parrot- the Amazona Versicolor. The trail descends 600 feet to the waterfall where we stop for a refreshing swim. One hikes back the same trail to the bus. A great tour with a combination of: history, flora, fauna, hiking, waterfall (and therapeutic mud bath if desired.)

The trail we will be taking through the Edmund Forest Reserve is approximately 7 miles, or approximately 10 kilometers long. The hike will take approximately 4 hours each way.
The trail itself is not very difficult, but there are some tough spots. As a result, while you don’t have to be an expert trekker by any means, you should be in good physical condition.
There is a great deal to see along the trail. Some examples include the highest peak in all of St. Lucia: Mount Gimie (3,117 feet), as well as an abundance of flora and fauna, rivers and numerous species of wildlife.

The Des Cartiers Rain Forest Trail is a 2.5 mile(4km) loop trail that takes between 1-2 hours to hike. If you stop frequently to see what is around you, the Des Cartier walk can easily take 2 hours.
Located about 1,800-feet above sea level, this hike goes through moist tropical and montane forest. The area receives as much as 150-200 inches of rain annually. Come prepared.
This easy loop trail is one favored by commercial tour operators. Pay the entrance fee at the interpretive center near the trailhead. Note the number of red anthuriums growing along the path as you head into the high canopied forest.
The trail follows roads carved out by the French in World War II. Several observation points deviate from the main trail. These are supposed to be good places for sighting the St. Lucian parrot but the ones I spotted were on the main trail, not at the turnoffs.
At a northern part of the loop is a trail that links up with the , a 4-hour hike requiring a guide.
The trees bordering the Des Cartiers Trail path are tall and mature and some have Tarzan-sized vines hanging from their high branches. The gommier trees are big enough to fashion two or three canoes from them.

When birdwatchers consider a new destination for their next holiday, one of the first questions they ask is “what are the speciality birds of the area?”. High on their list of priorities will be birds that are endemic to that location – in other words, they are found nowhere else on earth. St Lucia is blessed with five such species and four of them can be found within the grounds of Anse Chastanet with the fifth located not too far away.
However, you don’t have to hike into the woods to find a wealth of colorful birdlife. Both Green and Purple-throated Caribs together with their tiny relative the Antillean Crested Hummingbird can be found taking nectar from the flowerbeds surrounding the accommodation areas; both Zenaida Doves and Common Ground-Doves amble along the walkways in the early mornings whilst Scaly-naped Pigeons, Scaly-breasted Thrashers, Tropical Mockingbirds and Gray Kingbirds are ever present along the tree-lined roadways. Overhead, both Broad-winged Hawks and American Kestrels keep an eye out for prey; Magnificent Frigate birds, or “Cisseau” as they are known locally simply hang in the air looking for a free meal whilst in the restaurant, if you don’t keep a watchful eye on your butter or jam, those piratical Lesser Antillean Bullfinches and Bananaquits will enjoy a stolen breakfast.
Saint Lucia is an amazing destination for a waterfalls adventure! The island’s lush rainforest and volcanic landscape create some breathtaking cascades, perfect for exploring, swimming, and even hiking.
Here are some of the top waterfalls you should check out in Saint Lucia:
The best time to see these waterfalls in full flow is during or right after the rainy season (June to November), but they’re beautiful year-round.

Mount Gimie, is St. Lucia's highest peak, and at just over 3,000 feet (950m) above sea level we had sensational panoramic views of the island.
You could clearly see the east and south coastlines, including Vieux Fort and the Maria Islands. Looking to the north across the whole island, really gave you an
appreciation for the rugged terrain of St. Lucia. You will enjoy some incredible views for several minutes before the top of the mountain became
enveloped in clouds.
